Amanda and I are thinking about getting a laptop and I wanted to get some feedback. I know that Sean says that I should get an Apple, so now that we have that out of the way, I want to hear suggestions about everything: price, name brand, processor, memory, operating system, and anything else that you can think of.
It seems like everything that is out there right now pretty much out runs my desktop. Which makes me wonder, why not get the cheapest? I am happy with how my desktop operates so the bare minimum does not seem bad.

Before I begin, I should mention that I'm an IT guy and a Windows fanboy. Not that I couldn't be swayed into buying a Mac just for the fun of it, but if given the choice between only one, I'd chose a Windows machine.
Now that I got that out of the way, I'm here to give you my slightly biased opinion. I think you should get a Windows-based laptop, not a Mac. Why? It's been my experience that for the money you spend on a Mac, that same amount will provide more "bang for your buck" with a Windows-based laptop. It's simple. Your current desktop is Windows, right? All of your current programs will run just fine on another Windows machine, not a Mac. Your choices when it comes to selections of both applications and games are much more numerous than on a Mac.
Now I'll whole-heartedly admit that every Apple product just looks so damn cool and there are less security issues. So take whatever I've said into consideration. You're choices in prices are linear for any Apple product, so if you're considering Windows, I'll be able to provide insight only then.
i will most likely not buy an apple. for the price reasons. i am looking for something that is going to get me through the rest of the school year. i really need something while i am at school since i am spending a lot more time there now. amanda wants to be able to watch tv and surf the web. those are her only reasons for wanting a lab top.
i think that any "basic" laptop is going to do what i want. i just want to get a good quality computer.

Well I am totally against the Macs, so I won't even go there. As for as for laptops, I would not spend the money on them. I find them hard to work on and operate for regular usage. The are limited on the space as for as the mouse and the key board. I find that I can get more done at a regular computer. So I am totally getting the laptop unless it is absolutley neccessary. Although if you are going to get one and you are going to spend the money you might as well get one with a DVD player to watch on long trips in a car. Not much help but just my thoughts. I got one for free and I thought it was the greatest thing until I started using it.
Well I would suggest either a Dell or HP. Jacque brings up a good point about laptops, especially since they tend to cost more for the same components on desktops. But you said only a laptop, so make sure it has the following:
- Dual-Core Processor
- Windows Vista Home Premium (avoid Home Basic at all costs)
- 1 GB of RAM
- Hard Drive size doesn't really matter these days
- DVD Burner
- Any video card offered
- Wireless capability is a must for a laptop

HP has a similar one for $949
Yes, there are some for around $600, but since they all come with Vista preinstalled, it's a slow laptop that barely accomplishes the basic tasks. However if you're only looking for something that will be obsolete in 6 months, then go for it.
