"Concentration" for $2000 Alex...

Does anyone have the key to concentration? I am having a little problem that I cannot seem to get over. When I do not understand something at all it is very hard to sit down and concentrate on what I am doing. Lucky for me I do not understand what is going on in my math class. With a test coming up this Friday I have a lot of material to learn.

I wanted to get a little bit of input from everyone on what they do to concentrate in the most difficult times. I am trying to get out of what usually works best for me. I usually dig a great big whole, when I see what I mess I am in I can all of a sudden see that I need to get to work! I really do not want to do that again this semester. I want to start STRONG.

Let me know what you think.

don't act like that is real homework. you dug up some of amandas old work didn't you. :)

When i need to concentrate i, i, what was the questions again. just kidding.

go to a place that bears no distractions. whether it be a physical place or a mental place. This one is tricky because you have to eliminate mind-related distractions not just the physical ones.

So let's get this straight ... you, who used to come over to my apartment just to keep me from doing my homework, are asking for advice on how to concentrate? lol
It's easy ... make everyone else leave the room! lol

Just kidding ... seriously though, for me, I listen to music a lot. I'm used to a lot of distractions and tend to tune out whatever I don't need.

There are a couple of things you can do:

1. Set up a study schedule (I know this sounds lame, but it really works.) Set a goal for what you want to accomplish each night. Do you best to achieve that goal, or at least come close to it.

2. Before you sit down each time to study, try a mind trick. Think about how good it will feel to be finished with your assignment so that you can enjoy whatever fun thing you have planned without feeling guilty about the work you haven't done yet. Plus, if you aren't rushing through your work at the last minute, you are more likely to comprehend it and do better on your exam.

3. Eat something healthy before you study instead of snacking on junk food while you study. It will give you extra energy and make you more alert to your work.

Of course all of these mean actually getting rid of all distractions ... this includes Tetris. :-)

Hope this helps.

I suggest taking a midnight swim in the Teakwood pool. That always seemed to work for me. Its kind of ironic that you are working on your study skills after 6 years of college.
